About High Falls

Overlooking the roaring waterfalls it is named after, High Falls District offers expansive river gorge views, a beautifully restored nineteenth century ambiance that includes some of the most modern renovated office space in Upstate New York, and professional baseball and soccer at neighboring fields.

Increasingly the area’s numerous loft-style buildings house advertising agencies, architecture and engineering firms, and a rapidly growing residential community.

History

In the early 1800’s Nathaniel Rochester built his small village in what is now Rochester for one reason, the power of High Falls. The fast moving waters created by this spectacular landmark provided water power to the first mills. Eventually wheat milling became such a large industry in Rochester the nickname “Flour city” caught on. As time has changed the rest of Rochester, the High Falls neighborhood provides a look into the past with its historic buildings and cobblestone streets.

Future

The High Falls Neighborhood has evolved over the years into a diverse neighborhood. With numerous historic structures being converted into beautiful office and residential space, High Falls has become one of the most unique neighborhoods in Rochester. One group Garden Aerial has dedicated themselves to highlighting and promoting the Waterfall itself. Long term plans include a pedestrian bridge directly over the falls and beautifying the existing pedestrian bridge with an aerial garden.
